A Surefire Way to Finish Your Novel

The Warrior Writers’ Roadmap to Success

We get super excited about a new idea, we get started with all kinds of gusto, but like the image below, we sometimes have a hard time finishing - we struggle to make it to “The End.”

The problems we run into tend to lie between the great idea and the fabulous finish and these roadblocks can include things such as:

  1. Inadequate understanding of how story works, which can lead to frustration and a story that doesn’t work.

  2. Self doubt and lack of confidence.

  3. Getting bored with an untested idea.

  4. Overwhelm.

And while these are just a few of the roadblocks writers face, I believe there are multiple reasons why we struggle to finish, but even better, I also believe there’s something we can do that will help us reach the glorious end no matter what’s getting in our way.

And that is to develop a solid plan.

Whether you’re a pantser or a plotter, some degree of planning is necessary in order to tackle the labyrinth of a full length novel. By planning our novel and planning the execution of writing the novel, we’ll have a better chance of finishing what we started.

I know, I know. Maybe you’re one of those fortunate people who are able to plan internally and instinctively. You don’t need a written map or notes, you just write. If that’s the case, then I would say that you’re still doing some planning to a degree, just in your head. And if that works for you? Great! But for many of us, we need some sort of roadmap to follow.

I would say that, for the most part, if you’re having a hard time reaching the end, it’s most likely due to lack of adequate planning, which results in feeling overwhelmed, getting stuck, and even getting bored with an idea that wasn’t fully tested.

And I’m not saying that we have to plan out every single detail of every single moment in our story ahead of time. We don’t need to write a book length outline or determine every single breath our MC takes. That would be boring (though I get that it does work for some people).

Here’s the good news: If you have a solid plan, an understanding of story structure and what makes a story work, your ability to tell a story from start to finish will improve exponentially, making it easier to type those two glorious words: “The End.”

Writing a novel is a big task, an overwhelming task. But we can make it manageable by breaking it down into small steps that will lead us that much closer to success.
